Preparing your roof for winter is one of the most useful jobs a Berkshire homeowner can do before the cold, wet weather arrives. A roof that copes well in summer can quickly show its weak points once heavy rain, wind and frost set in, and finding out in the middle of a storm is stressful and costly. This guide walks Wokingham, Reading and Bracknell homeowners through what to check now, what to get sorted before the weather turns, and when it is time to talk to a roofer.
Why preparing your roof for winter matters in Berkshire
Winter puts a roof under pressure from every direction. Persistent rain finds any small gap, strong winds lift loose tiles and flashings, and repeated freezing and thawing can widen cracks in mortar and tired materials. We covered why this season could be especially wet in our guide to getting ready for the 2026 super El Niño.
Timing matters too. Larger roofing projects become harder to schedule and carry out once the weather turns, so autumn is the best window for preparing your roof for winter. Work done now is calmer, easier to plan and usually cheaper than urgent winter repairs in January.
Your checklist for preparing your roof for winter
Work through this list from the ground, using binoculars if you have them. Never climb onto the roof yourself.
- Gutters, downpipes and flat roof outlets are clear of leaves and debris
- No slipped, cracked or missing tiles or slates
- Ridge and verge mortar is intact, with no crumbling or gaps
- Lead flashing around chimneys, valleys and walls is sound and tight to the surface
- Fascias, soffits and guttering are straight, sealed and free from rot or peeling paint
- Flat roof coverings show no blistering, splits or pooled water
- The loft is dry, with no damp patches, daylight or condensation
- Overhanging branches are trimmed back from the roof and gutters
Start with your gutters and drainage
Autumn leaves are the most common cause of winter water problems. Blocked gutters overflow, soak the fascia boards and walls, and can send water back under the edge of the roof covering. Check that gutters are clear, joints are sealed, and downpipes carry water away freely. Sagging or leaking sections are better replaced now than left to get worse.

While you are looking, check the fascia and soffit boards behind the gutters. Soft, flaking or stained timber is a sign water has been getting in. Our guide to fascia and soffit replacement in Berkshire explains what to look for, and our fascias, soffits and guttering in Reading page shows what a finished roofline looks like.
Check your tiles, slates and ridge mortar
Checking the tiles and mortar is a key part of preparing your roof for winter. From the garden or pavement, scan the roof slope for tiles that sit out of line, have slipped, or are cracked. Look along the ridge and verge mortar for any that has crumbled or dropped away. A few loose tiles can let in wind driven rain, and strong gusts can turn a small gap into a much bigger problem overnight. Our guide on spotting the early signs of roof damage is a useful reference while you check.
Leadwork and chimneys
Chimney stacks, valleys and the joins between roofs and walls rely on lead flashing to keep water out. Over time lead can lift, split or pull away from the brickwork, and the mortar around a chimney can weaken. These are the spots where winter leaks often begin, so they deserve a close look. Fresh, properly fitted leadwork and sound mortar are a big part of preparing your roof for winter, because they decide how well it copes with months of rain.

Flat roofs need attention before the rain sets in
Preparing your roof for winter should always include the flat roofs on extensions, garages and dormers, because water sits on them for longer. Look for blistering, splits, lifted edges and puddles that are still there a day or two after rain. Keep outlets clear of leaves so water can drain away. A high performance bitumen torch on system is a reliable choice for a long lasting flat roof, and it is a job that can be done well in the cooler months. You can see what we offer on our flat roofing in Reading page.

Look after the loft too
Preparing your roof for winter also means looking inside, because the loft tells you a lot. On a dry day, look for damp patches on timbers, stains on the underside of the roof, daylight where there should be none, and signs of condensation or mould. Good loft ventilation helps keep roof timbers dry through the winter. Loft insulation also helps your home hold heat, and the Energy Saving Trust guide to roof and loft insulation explains how it works. If your loft is damp, get advice before adding insulation, because the cause needs sorting first.
Stay safe and keep an eye on the forecast
Roof work is dangerous, and wet leaves, frost and wind make it worse. Preparing your roof for winter safely means leaving anything that needs working at height to a professional, and taking photos from the ground so you have a record of what you see. Keep an eye on Met Office weather warnings so you know when strong winds or heavy rain are on the way. If a storm does cause damage, our guides to storm damage roof repair in Berkshire and emergency roof repair in Berkshire explain what to do first.
When it is time to think about a new roof
Sometimes preparing your roof for winter shows more than a few small jobs. If leaks keep returning, tiles are crumbling across the roof, or timbers are damp or sagging, the roof may be at the end of its working life. In that case a full replacement before winter can be better value than repeated fixes. Our posts on the benefits of replacing your roof before winter and roof repair vs roof replacement will help you weigh it up, and our new roof installation in Reading page shows what a full installation involves.
